IN A WHIRL
This striking woodblock print depicts one of Japan’s tidal whirlpools in the Naruto Strait. The strait’s tides produce the fourth-fastest current in the world, shifting enormous amounts of water in and out of the 1.3km passage everyday.
This depiction was undertaken in the early 1800s by one of the greatest artists of Japan’s woodblock print genre, Utagawa Hiroshige.
I have reimagined it in repurposed timbers using zero-emission inks that come with a lifetime anti-fade guarantee.
This work is both vibrant and chaotic, whole being contained and ordered by by Hiroshige’s fine penmanship and strong delineation of colour.
High: 27cm
Wide: 17cm
Thick: 9mm
The woodblock print comes strung and ready to hang and also makes an attractive display piece on any flat surface.
